PITTSBURGH, PA – March 16, 2017 – Pittsburgh-based ground improvement specialist Menard Group USA will be working with general contractor Skanska-Walsh Design JV for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to provide support for a double-sided MSE wall bridge approach at LaGuardia Airport.
Menard is familiar with constructing support for airports. At Reagan International Airport in Washington, D.C., they installed controlled modulus column (CMC) rigid inclusions to accommodate the large new A380 airbus traffic. At Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans, they used wick drains on the landside and airside of the new terminal to accelerate consolidation of soft underlying clays. They’ve also worked on ground improvement projects at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, University Park Airport in Pennsylvania and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia.
At LaGuardia, they’ll install close to 200 controlled modulus column (CMC) rigid inclusions at depths of 50-80 feet into a combination of soil types to support the approximately 250-foot long approach. The project is a part of a multi-billion dollar facelift to the existing Central Terminal Building, helping to transform it into state-of-the-art Terminal B.
“This project gives us a unique chance to further expand our technology into the New York City market,” said Mike Shedlosky, Menard Group USA Project Manager. “It’s also a great opportunity to develop a long-lasting relationship with the Port Authority of NY and NJ.”
Menard’s work will begin in April and last approximately a month. The entire project at LaGuardia is expected to be completed in 2021.
