PITTSBURGH – February 7, 2018 – Ground improvement specialists Menard Group USA will be working in their own backyard for Pittsburgh’s new Glasshouse apartment and retail project.
The five-story, 319-unit structure will be located on the former site of several of the city’s historic glass making factories, which date back to the 1800s. The site is currently being used for parking.
Menard was awarded the ground improvement contract for the project by Pittsburgh-based Rycon Construction Inc., who will be managing the project.
“Local projects are some of our favorites,” said J.W. Ramp, Project Manager, Menard Group USA. “There really is nothing better than helping to build out the communities we live and work in.”
Menard will be installing vibro stone columns/aggregate piers, which are columns of compacted granular material. Vibro stone columns can be cost-effective alternatives to piles or caissons that allow buildings to be placed on spread footings over improved fill materials. For the Glasshouse project, the columns will be installed through the upper loose compressible fill made of silts, sands, clays and gravel to improve the bearing capacity and control settlement under the footings of the building.

Glasshouse will include an underground parking garage, pool and multiple courtyards. Residents are expected to move in by summer of 2019.
