PITTSBURGH – October, 18 2016 – Pittsburgh-based ground improvement specialists Menard Group USA successfully completed the installation of vibratory stone columns (VSC) to stabilize the ground for a new 90,000 square foot warehouse and distribution facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
VSCs are made up of compacted granular material installed in fine-grained soils to increase the rate of consolidation, densify surrounding soils and improve the load-bearing characteristics of soft soils. They were chosen as the ground improvement technique for this project because they provide both an economical and time-saving solution for stabilizing the shallow soils that large structures, including warehouses, are often built upon.
“Using VSCs for this project allowed us to quickly mobilize to the site and install a ground improvement solution that provided cost savings over other forms of foundation support” said Robert Wyman, Regional Sales Manager.
Close to 200 VSCs were installed to support the structure at depths of 10 to 12 feet.
“This was a good project for us to demonstrate the versatility of our ground improvement offering,” said Frederic Masse, President, Menard Group USA. “People often associate ground improvement by Menard exclusively with deep depths and/or large projects, but with this project, we proved that stone columns are a perfect solution for stabilizing shallow ground under a relatively small structure. No project is too small or too shallow for us.”
Pilot Freight has recently signed on to lease 45,000 square feet of the new facility, which was constructed by the Elberon Development Group and The Avidan Group LLC.
The new facility opened in September of 2016.
