PITTSBURGH – November 29, 2016 – Pittsburgh-based ground improvement specialist Menard Group USA is working with general contractor Severino for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) to provide support for the Spaulding Turnpike widening project in Dover.
Menard Group USA will install over 300 controlled modulus column (CMC) rigid inclusions at depths of up to 35 feet to address ground settlement in the abutments on either side of the Turnpike. Traditionally, embankments would be supported by CMC rigid inclusions, but abutments would be supported by piles. What makes this project unique is the installation of CMC rigid inclusions to support both the embankment and abutment.
Menard Group USA will also install over 56,000 wick drains, or more than 3 million linear feet, at depths of up to 98 feet to address problematic clay deposits on the site.
“This project represents an excellent blend of ground improvement techniques across a long, highly variable highway soil profile. Our CMC rigid inclusion solution provides settlement control while improving the overall stability of the true abutment to allow for faster construction schedules and reduced costs. The utilization of wick drains across the remainder of the project offers a cost-effective solution for inducing pre-construction settlement of the final roadway alignments,” said Brandon Buschmeier, Menard Group USA Engineering Manager.
Project Manager Zach Kovacs agrees. “This is a great example of how our CMC rigid inclusion and wick drain crews can work together on one site to positively impact our client’s timeline and budget,” he said.
Work is expected to take 12 weeks over two equal phases. Phase 1 of the installation will begin in late October 2016, and phase 2 will take place in the second quarter of 2017. The roadway is slated to be completed and reopened in Fall 2020.
